The President claimed the leading Brexiteer “has a lot to offer” and would improve Britain’s negotiating efforts. He urged the UK to refuse to hand over the £39billion divorce settlement unless Brussels makes concessions. Trump also suggested the US could review the secret intelligence it shares with Britain if Jeremy Corbyn becomes Prime Minister.
Speaking to The Sunday Times the US leader said: “I like Nigel a lot. He has a lot to offer.
“He is a very smart person. They won’t bring him in.
“Think how well they would do if they did.
“They just haven’t figures that out yet”.
Trump arrives in the UK on Monday for a three day visit.
He is due to meet The Queen and other senior royals, attend a state banquet and hold discussions with Prime Minister Theresa May.
On Wednesday he will travel to Portsmouth to attend an event marking D-Day before continuing to France.
During his interview Trump also urged the UK to “walk away” and refuse to hand over the £39billion divorce payment unless the EU accepts British demands.
He commented: “If they don’t get what they want I would walk away.
“If you don’t get the deal you want, if you don’t get a fair deal, then you walk away.
“If I were them I wouldn’t pay $50billion (£39billion).
“I would not pay, that is a tremendous number”.
The President also suggested the UK could take legal action against the EU.
Trump is expected to be met by thousands of protestors when he arrives in Britain next week.
