eBay: Rare 50p coins – NEW Paddington Bear coin from Royal Mint sold for £16,000 | Life | Life & Style

Rare coins pop up on eBay for sale every day.

But it is rare that there is a coin that causes a bidding war a huge as this one.

A Paddington Bear 50p coin has sold for a whopping £16,100.

The piece, sold by eBay user Jordan Mcilquham (“jormcil-6”) from Wales yesterday, had a huge 116 bids on it.

A rare listing, the seller claim the coin to be the only one in the UK.

Royal Mint’s Paddington Bear coin was intended to go on sale as of June 18.

However, one has sneaked out of the mint and caused a storm among coin collectors.

The listing read: “The only one currently in the UK. Accidental release. Not yet released. Super rare. Mint condition.”

They also revealed where they found the coin, stating: “Found it in my change after a quick shop!”

Two more have been listed on the site since.

One sold for £500 and another for £900.

According to reports from This Is Money Royal Mint demanded the coin, found by a student, be sent back.

They apparently offered Jordan £1,000 for the coin.

However, she chose to sell the piece online – a clever move.

Royal Mint told This is Money: “It has been reported to us that a commemorative 50p coin featuring Paddington Bear has been spotted.

“We have undertaken our usual review when we are informed by the general public of such matters.

“However we can confirm that at no point was any commitment given to purchase the coin.

“The launch of the new Paddington Coins will proceed as originally planned.”

The coins mark the 60th anniversary of the Paddington Bear tales.

A “rare” Peter Rabbit 50p coin was listed for staggering £3,500.

The coin, selling for 7,000 times its face value, features Beatrix Potter’s beloved Peter Rabbit’s face, and was minted to commemorate the life of the British writer.
