How old do you have to be to watch Hereditary?
The British Board of Film Classification ranks Hereditary at a 15 rating, but what does that actually mean?
Hereditary is undoubtedly terrifying and the age rating is 15 means the movie is suitable only for those 15 years and over.
Hereditary’s writer-director Ari Aster referred to the movie as “a tragedy that curdles into a nightmare,” in an interview with Rolling Stone.
Aster took inspiration for Hereditary from movies like Rosemary’s Baby and Carrie.
Obviously, horror fans and foes alike should exercise discretion when they decide if they’re going to Hereditary, given how nightmarish it is.
Those who spook easily may want to wait till it becomes available on a streaming service or DVD in order to watch it during daylight hours in the comfort of their own flats, with the curtains open and plenty of happy music to play after the credits roll.
Can you watch Hereditary online?
The short answer is no, Hereditary isn’t available to stream online. Yet.
There are plenty of other Hereditary-like movies to stream, like the aforementioned Rosemary’s Baby and Carrie.
Hereditary will likely be released to some streaming site in the near future, but for now you’ll have to head to your local cinema to catch the horror movie.
What is the plot of Hereditary?
Hereditary is an intimate, nightmare of a movie starring Toni Collette as Annie Graham, Gabriel Byrne as her husband Steve.
Her children are Peter and Milly are played by Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro, respectively, and Ann Dowd appears as Joan, a mystic who says she can speak with the dead.
A24, Hereditary’s distributor, describes the plot this way:
“When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry.
“The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.
“Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.”
Critics continue to rave about the talent of the acting, writing, and of course, the horror that take place over the two hour and seven-minute runtime of Hereditary.
