The Lazio star has impressed for Serbia at the World Cup in Russia and is on Jose Mourinho’s radar.
Manchester United have already completed the signing of Fred and were targeting another midfielder before Marouane Fellaini decided the extend his contract.
Mourinho now needs to decide if he needs another or if he will look to fill other areas first.
Director of Trading Ian Marmion said: “Manchester United are the favourites to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio after Barcelona look to have pulled out of a deal to sign the Serbian, put off by Lazio’s €80 million asking price. The Red Devils have long been linked with a move for Milinkovic-Savic and can be found at 2/1 to complete a deal for the 23-year-old.
“The midfielder’s good form for club and country makes it unlikely United would go unchallenged for his signature, and we have Juventus in at 4/1 to sign Milinkovic-Savic. The Serie A champions may also face competition from their league rivals Napoli, who could use the Serbian as a replacement for Jorginho, himself linked with a transfer away from the Stadio San Paolo.
“Real Madrid and Manchester City round up the betting market for Milinkovic-Savic, priced at 11/2 and 13/2 respectively.”
United have also signed Diogo Dalot and are looking at a centre-back and forward.
Fellaini’s decision to stay at Old Trafford may allow Mourinho to use more of his budget on defence and attack with midfield now less of a priority.
Fellaini revealed earlier this week that his decision would be made public in the coming days and it emerged yesterday he will stay at Old Trafford.
He had been linked with Arsenal and the Chinese Super League but is set to sign a new deal with United.
