- The father of Meghan Markle, 36, has spoken on Good Morning Britain about his daughter in a world exclusive interview today.
- Meghan’s dad Thomas Markle, 73, revealed his adorable nickname for the wife of Prince Harry, 33.
- Thomas refers to her by the nickname “Bean”, said to be abbreviated from “Beanstalk”.
- Meghan was given the royal title of Duchess of Sussex upon her marriage.
Thomas Markle, 73, appeared on Good Morning Britain with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid to discuss his daughter Meghan Markle’s wedding to Prince Harry – the event he sadly missed due to serious health concerns the week before the big day.
During the emotional interview, where Thomas was on a live video-link from his home in Mexico, Meghan’s dad let slip he has a secret nickname for the Duchess of Sussex.
Thomas, who was a photographer, revealed he called his daughter “Bean” through her childhood.
Explaining the cute nickname, Thomas said it was based on a fairytale. He said: “When [Meghan] was a child she loved Jack and the Beanstalk.
“Because she’s so small, I called her Beanie or Beanstalk.
“Now I call her Bean all the time,” he added.
Asked by presenter Piers Morgan whether he would now call her Duchess of Sussex instead, Thomas said no.
“I don’t think I’ll call her Duchess, I don’t have to because she’s my daughter.”
He also spoke about the wedding itself, which Thomas watched from a bed and breakfast hotel in Mexico.
Watching it was difficult for me because I wasn’t there, he said.
“But at the same time I’m watching my daughter getting married in front of the whole world.”
Thomas was unable to attend the wedding on May 19 2018 for reported health reasons.
“I spoke to her a day and a half after the wedding,” he added.
“I told her I thought it was fabulous and she looked beautiful.”
Earlier this week, Meghan accompanied the Queen, 92, on a visit to Chester.
The day of royal engagements marked Meghan’s new role within the family.
Meghan’s modest Givenchy dress was a safe choice alongside the monarch.
Meghan’s wedding dress was also designed by Givenchy, and the pale colour of her dress today is a throwback to the white gown.
She also appeared to be wearing royal appropriate clear tights today – a rule the Queen reportedly has for royal women.
