At least 80 people were on board the plane when it went down near Guadalupe Victoria International airport, local media reports.
Aeromexico said it is aware of “an accident” at and is “working to verify the information”.
It is not yet known exactly how many people were on board the plane when it crashed.
Pictures from the scene show thick black smoke rising from the jet which went down in scrubland not far from the airport.
Emergency services are on the scene as fire crews battle to extinguish the flames.
The flight was reportedly on its way to the capital, Mexico City, when it crashed.
Local media has reported the plane is an E190 aircraft which is capable of carrying 100 passengers.
The Durango state governor, Jose Aispuro, confirmed the accident on Twitter, but said he had no information about the fate of those on board.
Guadalupe Victoria International airport has been closed while emergency services respond to the crash.
