Reddit user Blood_Raven has posted a theory that has been 85% upvoted, and involves Jaime’s journey to Lady Stoneheart.
They wrote: “As of where we are now it doesn’t look good for [Jaime].
“He may be about to walk to his own death. But as ruthless and revenge-driven as Lady Stoneheart seems she has already proven she can hold off on some slight revenge in the interest of an even ‘sweeter’ victim.
“How about this; once Jaime and Brienne reach her camp, she somehow discovers they hold feelings for each other.
“As a result she captures Brienne and essentially holds her hostage to Jaime. Telling Jaime that he is to kill Cercei lest she kill Brienne. Therefore setting the Valonqar prophecy in full motion.”
They added: “I think we all know it’s not going to be as simple as Jaime being taken to her and then simply being executed, something is going to happen, probably not along the way as [George RR Martin, author] wants Jaime and LSH to meet.”
Despite a huge number of upvotes, many fans responded with alternate riffs on this idea.
“Good thought but I don’t think it will happen,” said user Janneyc1.
“I think GRRM is planning something much better for Cersei. That said, I think we get to see a trial of combat one more time.”
Martin has been writing The Winds of Winter for quite some time, and maintained in a recent blog that it is his top priority despite having other projects on the go.
He wrote: “Before you ask, work on WINDS OF WINTER continues, and remains my top priority. It is ridiculous to think otherwise.
“If I wasn’t busy with WINDS, don’t you think I’d be scripting one or more of these pilots myself? It’s not as if I’ve never written for TV…”
The Winds of Winter will likely come out, at the very earliest, in 2019 – probably after the Game of Thrones TV show has wrapped up.
It’s now been almost seven years since its predecessor, 2011’s A Dance With Dragons, hit shelves.
