8 decadent desserts from restaurants and cafes in Metro Detroit 1

Sweet treats can be a feast for the eyes as well as the best way to end a great meal.

Stacked shakes, perfect pies and delicate torts are all around if you know where to look. They’re not just found at fancy cafes and French patisseries, either. Breweries, neighborhood diners and even food trucks sometimes also surprise you at the end of your meal with something beautiful and sweet.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, keep an eye out of these eight show-stopping desserts — four sophisticated and four shocking — found throughout Metro Detroit.

Orange labneh at Besa Detroit: Just about everything to do with this downtown Detroit restaurant is stylish, including the dessert offerings. Their house-made orange labneh uses honey from Bees in the D and has a honeycomb crunch, pistachio and is topped with crispy kataifi. Pair it with a glass of tawny port or cognac from the upscale restaurant’s dessert drink menu. 600 Woodward, Detroit. (313) 315-3000. besadetroit.com.

Tamu at Baobab Fare: This nondairy and gluten-free treat is a smooth pudding made from creamy avocados and passion fruit, and topped with chia seeds. It’s a bright ending to your meal at this new East African restaurant, which serves eggplant stew and kuku, a pan-fried chicken dish with a mustard and onion sauce. Tamu is $7. 6568 Woodward, Detroit. (313) 800-5111. baobabfare.com.

Russian honey cake at Warda Patisserie: Impress your coffee date with this hand-crafted, expertly layered dessert of spiced honey cake and dulce de leche cream. It’s just one of the many beautiful and polished treats from this Eastern Market cafe. You can order it online, too. Look for another location of Warda Patisserie to come to Midtown soon at  1464 Gratiot, Detroit. (248) 795-3026. warda-patisserie.square.site.

Blueberry lavender lemon sponge cake at Dessert Oasis: Owner Nathan Hamood launched this seasonal dessert at his three Metro Detroit cafes in honor of Mother’s Day, and it will be sticking around through the summer. Crafted with house-made lavender syrup, pair a slice with a cappuccino, pour-over coffee or their matcha mocktail, the Big Green. If the blueberry lavender lemon sponge cake has been scooped up for the day, Dessert Oasis also sells banana Nutella cake, tiramisu, gluten-free brownies and more. 1220 Griswold, Detroit. 115 S. Main, Royal Oak. 336 S. Main, Rochester. docr.coffee.

Loaded shakes at Burger Shack: Here’s where things veer away from sophisticated and start getting purely fun. The name says burgers, but this Dearborn Heights business is known for colorful hand-spun milkshakes topped with more dessert like strawberry shortcake chunks or a slice of superman cheesecake. Some flavors are limited, like the Almond Joy shake with chocolate, sliced almonds, coconut and topped with a few fun-sized candy bars. 8606 N. Telegraph, Dearborn Heights. (313) 769-5100. getburgershack.com.

Banana Bourbon Toffee Caramel Cake Shake from Sugah Please Coffee House: Is it even a milkshake without an entire slice of banana bourbon toffee caramel cake on top? Don’t fear it toppling over, there’s also a giant, chocolate-covered strawberry surrounded by whipped cream to give it  some balance. Get this deluxe dessert daily for $15 at the newly opened business at the Twelve Oaks Mall. Sugah Please also has a mobile app for easy advance ordering. 27678 Novi, Novi. (947) 600-7252. sugahplease.com.

Dessert Pizza at Street Sweets: Find more colorful, sugary fun at this Sterling Heights bakery, pastry shop and café, which specializes in custom cakes, doughnuts, Mediterranean sweets, coffee drinks, vegan and gluten-free options and their signature dessert pizzas. Perfect for sharing, the highly customizable dessert pizzas can be a variety of sizes and include choice of “sauce” like Nutella, peanut butter chocolate, marshmallow, vanilla or chocolate. Toppings include any candy you can imagine, from birthday cake Oreos to Butterfingers. 2237 18 Mile, Sterling Heights. (586) 991-5380. streetsweetsdet.com.

Make a wish Sundae at 220 Merrill: Last but in no way on Earth least, this massive treat arrives to your table in an oversized martini glass filled with an ice cream sundae that includes brownies, fruit, lollipops, colorful sprinkles and a huge slice of funfetti cake. It runs $32 but serves the entire table. The make a wish sundae is part of 220 Merrill’s whimsical dessert list that also includes a giant cotton candy and crème brûlée cheesecake. 220 E. Merrill, Birmingham. (248) 646-2220. 220restaurant.com.
