Former England and Arsenal right-back Alex Scott was working as a pundit for Sky Sports for the Three Lions’ friendly against Switzerland this evening.
Scott was discussing England midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek and his lack of game time at club side Chelsea.
Loftus-Cheek has played in two of Chelsea’s first four Premier League games of the season but both of those appearances have been off the bench.
The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace, his first loan move away from Stamford Bridge.
Scott reckons Loftus-Cheek should have joined Palace a season or two earlier to gain further first-team experience.
And she then praised Zakaria for joining Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach instead of Arsenal or Liverpool in the summer of 2017.
“A footballer’s career is so short,” Scott said.
“You don’t want to look back with regrets.
“He (Loftus-Cheek) could have gone on loan earlier to Crystal Palace, got more game time.
“He would have been maybe playing more for the national team and got in there.
“I think you’re right, it does come down to the player some time.
“Actually when you look at the Swiss team, the young guy, 21, Zakaria, he turned down moves to Arsenal and Liverpool because he said he did not want to be sitting on the bench.
“He wanted to make sure he was playing week in, week out.”
Zakaria started the friendly against England at the King Power, winning his 14th cap.
The 21-year-old has made 24 league appearances for Gladbach, scoring two goals.
