It is important to keep your skin feeling revitalised
However, there is one tried and tested anti-ageing hero that we recommend time and time again as it has the power to transform skin after just a few weeks’ regular use.
Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is one of the most potent skincare ingredients on the market.
It encourages the skin to produce new cells, kick-starting collagen and elastin production. Over time it softens fine lines and wrinkles, helps boost collagen production, brightens and firms, fades pigmentation marks and can also tackle acne.
Once the preserve of expensive skincare ranges, retinol is now so popular that this weekend Asda is launching Nspa Expert Nightly Revitalising Retinol, which costs just £10 for one month’s supply.
The supermarket brand is so confident about the capsules, which contain retinol, avocado oil and chamomile extract and should be smoothed over skin in the evening, that it’s offering customers their money back if they don’t notice a difference after a month.
If you’re new to retinol, we’ve put together a beginner’s guide to ensure you get the best results from this skin transformer.
When should you use it?
Retinol breaks down in sunlight, which is why it is best used at night. It should be applied to cleansed skin and can be followed with a night cream.
You will need to wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 every day to protect your skin and for best results, include a vitamin C serum as part of your morning routine.
Nspa Expert Nightly Revitalising Retinol,
How much should you use?
The first rule of retinol is to start slowly. Because of its potency, it can have some unwanted side effects if your skin isn’t used to it, including redness, peeling and irritation.
Some retinol products contain calming ingredients such as hyaluronic acid to counteract the irritation. There are some newer retinol derivatives such as retinyl palmitate, specifically designed to suit more sensitive skin.
If you’re using prescription-strength retinol, start with a pea-sized amount and use it two times per week. Slowly increase the frequency to give your skin a chance to get used to it.
How long before you see results?
You may notice initial improvements in two weeks. However, it takes a few months to see the full benefits.
The new generation of products, which are gentler on the skin, often have a lower concentration of active ingredients so can take longer to work. Retinol is just as effective on the neck and decolletage as it is on the face. You can even use it around your eyes to help soften crow’s feet.

Trinny Woodall undergoes treatment
Could 50 minutes of pinching and prodding really banish cellulite?
We have always said that there is no cure for cellulite, which affects 85 per cent of women over the age of 20.
However, there are tricks and treatments that can soften its appearance.
TV stylist Trinny Woodall, 54, has revealed she has regular 50-minute Body Remodelage sessions, which she says have helped her lose an inch from her hips while keeping her skin smooth and cellulite-free.
The treatment was developed in France and involves intense pinching and massage to boost circulation and tone the skin. It costs £1,600 for 10 sessions.
The good news is that if you want to try this out, you can achieve a similar result at home without spending a penny.
Massage is an effective way to break down cellulite deposits. It also stimulates blood flow, increasing circulation to the areas where fat has accumulated and reducing the skin’s ability to form cellulite. Using a detox massage oil, rub your hands firmly up and down your thighs.
Follow this with some strong kneading in circular movements. The more pressure you apply the better the result.
Do this for half an hour a day and you should see some improvement.
