Cape Coral police said a weekend crash that sent one man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries was fueled by speed and alcohol.

Police reported the two-vehicle crash at the intersection of El Dorado and Coronado parkways happened shortly after 8:30 a.m. Sunday when a white 2019 Nissan Sentra driven south on Coronado at high speed by Scott Michael Kirkwood Jr., 28, of Cape Coral, failed to heed a stop sign at El Dorado.

Kirkwood’s car drove through the intersection and struck the driver’s side of an eastbound black 2017 Audi Q7 SUV driven by Asif Azam, 45, who police said was making a left turn off El Dorado onto northbound Coronado.

Kirkwood was trauma-alerted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. Azam suffered minor injuries.

Cape Coral police said speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
