Cape Coral woman killed in crash involving wrong-way driver on U.S. 41 in Charlotte County

A Cape Coral woman was killed and another driver critically injured Friday night in a wrong-way crash on U.S. 41 in Charlotte County.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a 50-year-old Port Charlotte man was driving a pickup north in the southbound lanes of 41 near Morningside Drive.

A 21-year-old Cape Coral woman was driving a sedan south on the inside lane of 41 near Morningside shortly before 11 p.m.

The front of the truck hit the front of the sedan as well as another pickup following the car.

The Cape Coral woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man the FHP said was driving the wrong way on 41 was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. The driver of the third vehicle, a 42-year-old woman from Lehigh Acres, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital.

The FHP said alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash, remains under investigation with criminal charges pending.

The FHP withheld the names of the dead and injured.
