A Fort Myers woman is dead after crashing into a tree on Bonita Beach Road early Sunday, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The 31-year-old woman was the only person in the car and driving west in the outside lane near Valencia Bonita, which sits in the far east of Bonita Springs. The driver failed to navigate a left curve in the roadway and smashed into a tree in the median at 6:36 a.m., according to FHP.

The sedan caught fire, and the woman was pronounced dead on-scene, FHP states. She is the second person killed in a vehicle crash in Lee County today.

With the two deaths in Lee County today this puts the to-date fatality total at 83 as of today. According to the Florida Division of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
