The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed Friday it is investigating the cause of a plane crash near a church in LaBelle that killed one person and injured another.
The Hendry County Sheriff’s office responded to the crash around 3:30 p.m. Thursday near the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, at Collingswood and Eucalyptus boulevards near State Road 80.
The Piper Aerostar 600 two-passenger plane crashed approximately 40 yards from the church, which wasn’t damaged and was empty at the time. Rescue workers found two individuals on the plane.
One person was taken for medical care, the other was deceased, the sheriff’s office reported. Officials have not released their names.
“Our prayers go out to the family of one of the two men on board who perished. Thanks for sparing the other!” a Facebook post from the church said.
The FAA was unable to reach the scene Thursday.
