Thursday morning, the Florida Department of Education is hosting its Board of Education meeting in Duval County. The meeting is taking place at the Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Advanced Technology Center campus downtown.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is supposed to speak at the beginning of the meeting.
Among the items the board is expected to vote on is a set of controversial teaching standards surrounding critical race theory and whether it should be discussed in a classroom setting or not. Guidance proposed to the board today could place strict guidelines on how teachers deliver U.S. history lessons. Gov. Ron DeSantis’ camp announced Thursday morning that he would be attend and speak with the board.
Over the last few months, teachers have expressed concerns that the new guidance would keep teachers too cautious, shying away from harsh realities that sometimes come with current events and history lessons.
