A 20-year-old Fort Myers man has been charged in Thursday’s crash that took the life of a 28-year-old Massachusetts man and likely was Lee County’s 102nd and final traffic fatality for 2020.
A report from the Florida Highway Patrol issued Friday said the driver of the van involved in the crash, identified by an FHP spokesman as Alfredo Alvarado Calel, was arrested late Thursday and booked into Lee County Jail.
Calel remains in county jail on $200,000 bond and will be arraigned Feb. 1 on charges of driving without a valid license involving a death.
The crash occurred shortly after noon on State Road 80. The Fall River, Massachusetts, man was not named, as the FHP does not identify victims of crashes, citing Marsy’s Law.
A report from the FHP said the man was killed when a van crossed into his lane while he was driving west on 80.
The van was eastbound on 80, then crossed into the westbound lanes and collided with the front of the Massachusetts man’s vehicle, according to FHP.
As of Dec. 22, the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles crash dashboard lists 99 road fatalities for Lee County in 2020. Since then, the country recorded a fatal crash in Estero on Dec. 26, a fatal motorcycle crash on North River Road on Dec. 27 and Thursday’s State Road 80 fatality.
