A 71-year-old Fort Myers man was killed Friday when his SUV hit a tree on Bass Road and Bayberry Bend just off Summerlin Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the man was driving south on Bass Road and lost control of the SUV at midnight.

The SUV traveled off the roadway to the right, hit a tree on the west shoulder, and caught fire.

The driver was taken to hospital and pronounced dead. The man’s identity was withheld under Marsy’s Law.

The death is the 86th fatality on Lee County roads in 2020.
