Attorney for Casey Crowther gives statement after he is indicted for misusing PPP funds

A day after a grand jury returned a superseding indictment charging Fort Myers roofing company owner Casey D. Crowther, he entered a plea of not guilty on Friday during his arraignment.

Crowther, 35, of North Fort Myers and president of Target Roofing, was accused of falsely acquiring $2 million in COVID-19 relief funds. He was arrested and charged Sept. 2, and released on $100,000 bond Sept. 3.

Crowther faces seven counts including, bank fraud, making a false statement to a lending institution, and illegal monetary transactions.

A federal grand jury had previously indicted Crowther, alleging COVID relief fraud on Sept. 23. The superseding indictment contains additional counts charging Crowther with mortgage fraud.

Assistant United States Attorney Trent Reichling is prosecuting the case and informed Crowther on Friday afternoon of his charges and the penalties they hold.

His bank fraud charges and false statement to a lending institution charges hold a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison, a $1 million fine and up to five years of supervised release.

Crowther’s illegal monetary transactions hold a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, $250,000 fine and up to three years of supervised release.

A 2020 40-foot catamaran, property in St. James City, and $2,098,700, which are alleged to be proceeds of the offenses, is subject to forfeiture by The United States. 

Crowther is due back in court at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 9  for a status hearing.
