George RR Martin reveals why Winds of Winter is taking so long | Books | Entertainment

The last A Song Of Ice And Fire book to come out was A Dance with Dragons seven years ago and there is still no release date for its successor.

For now Martin is hard at work on The Winds of Winter, which is believed to be over 1500 pages long.

While we known it won’t release this year, fans are hopeful for 2019.

In the meantime Martin has revealed a couple of reasons for why the book is taking so long to write.

Speaking with , Martin admitted he hasn’t had time to visit the Game of Thrones final season set due to his writing commitments.

The 70-year-old said: “Going to set is a lot of fun but there’s nothing for me to do there, so I thought I better stay home and not go to Croatia; or Spain; or Belfast, [Northern] Ireland. I still have two books to write.

“I’m working on [The Winds of Winter], and I wish I’d been done four years ago.

“But I’m slow and the book is very complex, although there are a lot of great distractions out there.”

The book begins 300 years before A Game of Thrones and is a history of the Targaryen Kings from Aegon the Conquerer to Aegon III.

The history is told from the point of view of Archmaester Gyldayn.

The synopsis reads that it “chronicles the conquest that united the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule through the Dance of the Dragons: the Targaryen civil war that nearly ended their dynasty forever.”

The Winds of Winter might release in 2019.
