A case of animal cruelty resulted in the arrest of a Harlem Heights resident Friday who Lee County sheriff’s investigators said bludgeoned a cat to death.

Antonio Rodriguez, 29, was arrested on charges of aggravated animal cruelty. He remains in Lee County Jail on $100,000 bond and will be arraigned Dec. 7.

A report from the Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a residence in the Lago Del Sol Apartment complex off Clear Lake Loop shortly before midnight to investigate a complaint of animal cruelty to a cat.

Sheriff’s Office detectives found blood, determined to be from an animal, on a wall inside the residence.

The report said detectives learned Rodriguez had bludgeoned a cat to death and disposed of the carcass.

“This violent act against a defenseless animal is sickening,” Sheriff Carmine Marceno said. “Anyone who intentionally harms an animal will go to jail.”
