It’s our first pandemic Mother’s Day when restaurants are allowed to service diners indoors. Still, like in 2020, many businesses are offering guests carryout bundles and packages fit for a queen this holiday. 

Because it’s one of the busiest dining days of the year and restaurants are still facing capacity restrictions, you’re going to want to plan in advance whether you’re dining indoors, outdoors or getting carryout.

Here are some ideas of how to celebrate mom with Sunday brunch or dinner this Mother’s Day. All specials are for May 9 unless otherwise noted. 

Wayne County

AB’s Amazing Ribs: Treat mom to a carryout barbecue spread from this halal restaurant and caterer that offers many platters and packages, like their feast for four with a 1-pound brisket, slab of ribs, whole smoked chicken or a dozen wings, mac and cheese, fries and cornbread. 27310 Ford, Dearborn Heights. Apparatus Room: Enjoy a special a la carte brunch service 10 a.m-2 p.m. on Mother’s Day. Some highlights include an acai bowl with yogurt, berries and house-made granola and a Buckboard Benedict with smoked pork collar, Brussels sprouts slaw and chipotle hollandaise. 250 W. Marrow: Chef Sarah Welch and the Dynami Foundation have teamed up to offer dining kits for Mother’s Day that will help raise funds for breast cancer research, particularly the Restaurant Outreach Fund, which provides preventative care to Detroit-area hospitality workers. The brunch kit serves four and includes a smoked salmon blini platter, asparagus and burrata salad, petit Lorraine quiche and cinnamon rolls for $80. Mario’s: Instead of a buffet, this year Italian favorite Mario’s has a plated Mother’s Day brunch, noon-4 p.m. Dinner is served 3-9 p.m. $40 adults, $15 for kids 12 and younger, free for 4 and younger. 4222 Second, Detroit. (313) 832-1616. 

Mitchell’s Fish Market: For dining in, this seafood-centric chain offers a three-course menu for $39-$55 starting with choice of soup or salad, a seafood, tenderloin or surf-and-turf entrée and dessert. For carryout, get the a family meal for four; $99 for steaks and crab cakes or $119 for steak and lobster, plus Caesar salad and sides. 17600 Haggerty, Livonia. PizzaPlex: Turn your Mother’s Day meal into an experience with this two-hour Zoom class from Detroit’s PizzaPlex with a lesson on how to make Neapolitan pizza at home and a demo on stretching the dough and making pizza “fly.” Tickets include two bottles of wine, two pre-made dough balls, ingredients to make another two dough balls, and toppings for four margherita pizzas. $85. yolomother.eventbrite.com

The Rattlesnake: This upscale, riverside restaurant is offering a five-course Mother’s Day brunch menu with hor d’oeuvres, assorted pastries and your choice of a salad, entrée and dessert for $59 per person plus tax and tip. 300 River Place Drive, Detroit. (313) 567-4400 ext. 3. 

Ivy Kitchen and Cocktails: An east side restaurant known for weekend brunch service, Ivy has indoor and heated outdoor dining, plus carryout and delivery through DoorDash or Grubhub. Think shrimp and grits, French toast, breakfast cocktails and more. 9215 E. Jefferson, Detroit. ivykc.com

Oakland County

Bill’s: Brunch hours here go until 4 p.m., which is perfect for a relaxed Sunday outing. Bill’s has a lot for mom to like, including a grilled shrimp kale Caesar salad, brioche French toast, eggs benedict and more, including a full bar. Hazel, Ravines & Downtown: The new brunch menu has crab cakes and eggs, a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese, breakfast po’ boy and more, including brunch-friendly cocktails and mocktails. Brunch runs 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Hazel’s Eastern Shore menu runs all day with lobster rolls, steam pots and steamed blue crab by the dozen or half dozen. 1 Peabody, Birmingham. Madam: A new restaurant inside the Daxton Hotel in downtown Birmingham, Madam will offer a three-course, fixed-price brunch ($75 per person) with a mimosa for mom and a dessert to take home. Menu highlights include quiche madam and crispy soft shell crab. The Morrie: This roadhouse-style restaurant in downtown Royal Oak will serve Mother’s Day brunch 11 a.m-4 p.m. with items like Nashville hot chicken and waffles, pecan pancakes, smoked chicken wings and more, including a menu of brunch drinks like mimosas, bloodys and mules. Stage Deli: The team here has also curated a few carryout packages like the brunch for four with eggs Florentine that you bake at home plus yogurt with honey and berries, bagels and schmear and bake-at-home bobka monkey bread ($75). Get a more elaborate package that includes bagels, lox and all the fixings, tuna salad, egg salad, tomato salad and bake-at-home cheese blintz souffle ($95). Order either by May 7. Macomb County

Andiamo Warren: Serve mom brunch with all the trimmings from the comfort of home with Andiamo’s to-go kit that includes and oven-ready meal with Dearborn brown sugar-glazed ham, French toast strata, thick-cut Applewood bacon, sausage patties, potatoes O’Brien, assorted pastries, quiche and orange juice for $29.95 per person. Gaudino’s: This Italian restaurant and market known for meatballs, charcuterie, pasta and pizza will have a special Mother’s Day menu with seatings at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Indoor and outdoor dining available. Vintage House Banquets and Catering: Bring the banquet home with chicken piccata, Italian sausage with peppers and onions, Dearborn glazed ham, au gratin potatoes, pasta, veggies, rolls, salad and an apple or cherry pie. $135 feeds 5, $260 feeds 10. Waves Chill and Grill: This Nautical Mile restaurant offers a Mother’s Day menu for dine-in or carryout with broccoli and cheddar quiche, Thai flank steak salad, lamb chops, sautéed crab cakes, salmon picatta and more. Other counties

Crust: A Baking Company: Get a take-and-bake meal from this excellent bakery and restaurant in Fenton. For Mother’s Day only, get your choice of bread pudding French toast meal for four ($59), lemon ricotta pancakes for two ($34), a selection of quiches, breakfast sides and more, including a DIY mimosa bar. Bavarian Inn Restaurant: One of the few Mother’s Day brunch buffets available is a German feast in Frankenmuth. The Bavarian Inn is making special efforts to ensure a safe experience, which includes food plated by staff from behind Plexiglas shields. Seatings are at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and costs $31.99 for adults, $18.50 for ages 8-12 and $12.95 for ages 3-7. The restaurant is also taking reservations for a family-style dinner of Frankenmuth chicken and all the trimmings, or a takeout dinner that feeds four for $109 or eight for $189.
