Kanye West announces name change ahead of album release

Kanye West has announced he wants to be known as YE – a nickname he has used for many years and the title of his last album.

The 41-year-old took to Twitter to make the announcement of his name change ahead of the release his latest studio album.

“The being formally (sic) known as Kanye West. I am YE,” he tweeted.

In June, the rapper revealed the moniker has a spiritual meaning.

“I believe YE is the most commonly used word in the Bible,” he is reported as telling LA radio station Real 92.3 when promoting his music.

“In the Bible it means ‘you.’ So I’m you, I’m us. It went from being Kanye, which means the only one, to being just YE – just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confused, everything. I’m just more a reflection of who we are.”

West is due to appear as the musical guest on the US TV sketch show Saturday Night Live later to coincide with the release of Yandhi – his new album.

West follows in the footsteps of a long line of musicians who have undergone a name change.

Diddy has been known by monikers including Puff Daddy, Puffy and P Diddy, Snoop Dogg has previously gone by the name Snoop Lion, and Prince famously rebranded as a symbol.
