That’s the surprise opinion of Lakers legend Byron Scott, who believe his former team’s bitter rivals are a better option.
Leonard will be a top target for the Lakers this offseason, and he has somehow increased his stock even higher during the 2019 NBA Playoffs.
The 27-year-old has broken numerous records so far, but the most important for all Toronto Raptors fans is leading the franchise to their first ever NBA Finals.
He will now be aiming to take them one step further to give the city their first ever NBA championship.
But in their way will be the formidable Golden State Warriors, who could welcome back both DeMarcus Cousins and Kevin Durant at some point in the Finals.
And while Leonard has proven that the only thing on his mind right now is winning a championship, it is little over a month until he becomes a free agent.
Even before he was traded to Toronto last season, it was reported he favoured a move back home to Los Angeles.
Those reports have continued to resonate throughout the campaign, with the LA Clippers doing some low-key recruiting by sending executives to watch him in action.
The Lakers meanwhile expressed their interest last summer when they tried trading for him, only for the San Antonio Spurs to snub their approach.
There was plenty of optimism around the Lakers when LeBron James joined the franchise just under a year ago.
But that optimism has turned into scepticism after a disappointing season and the latest controversy surrounding Magic Johnson’s explosive exit.
And Scott, who won three NBA title as a Laker, has advised Leonard to strongly consider joining the Clippers over his former team.
“If you want to come to L.A., I might say, ‘Let me look at the Clippers first,'” Scott said on ESPN’s The Jump.
“If I am Kawhi Leonard and I’m getting pursued by both L.A. teams, I think I’m gonna take a harder look at the Clippers because of the stability that they have.”
