Man taken into custody shortly after laser is pointed at LCSO helicopter

On Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, a Lehigh man was arrested for shining a laser at an LCSO helicopter that was in the air.

A Lehigh man was arrested Friday after Lee County Sheriff’s Office says the man pointed a laser at one of its helicopters.

Miguel Jimenez, 45, was taken into custody at his home in the 2000 block of East 8th Street shortly after the incident, according to a sheriff’s office Facebook post.

On Friday, members of the sheriff’s Aviation Unit were conducting patrol flights in the area of Lehigh Acres when the crew saw a green laser light shining inside the helicopter.

The pilot flew the helicopter toward the laser, while the tactical flight officer searched for the exact location the laser was coming from, the post states.

Crew members were able to locate and guide patrol deputies to Jimenez’s home by using the Forward Looking Infrared.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in a video that one of the crew members stated the laser hit his eye, which could have caused the helicopter to crash.
