Christians who watch Fox

To the writer of the letter “Fox TV hosts, Christians and patriots” published April 17:

There are Christians who watch Tucker and Hannity. I agree John McCain was a hero. I emphatically disagree with “pure hatred toward minorities” that is attributed to some of us.

We have been called by our current president, with whom I can certainly disagree on a lot, to come together. Let us do so, please.

(Editor’s note: The following paragraph is a separate letter from the same writer who wrote the three previous paragraphs.)

I have no hesitation frequently to criticize The News-Press and, even more so, USA Today. Today is an exception. Thank you for the excellent article in the sports section about Mr. Markenson Pierre. It was inspiring and instructional. I truly hope many young people growing up in difficult circumstances — and their fathers — will be encouraged by his example and your reporting of it.

Pleas to Congress

End the filibuster. Tell all the Republicans to honor our democratic process and accept our president. Start working for the people and not Trump or the party. Work for all Americans. (Editor’s note: This letter was submitted April 7.)

Fewer plastic bags

By now most people have accumulated a few free shopping bags. I leave them in the car and take them into the grocery store. I put them on the counter first and then load or let the clerk load my purchases. They are easier to load, hold more and are easier to carry out when the load is light.

I want to tell people in line ahead of me or behind me the benefits to them and to the planet, but I’m afraid to get cursed or worse, so I just try to set an example.

Cycling safety

When will we finally wake up and build some safe bike paths. I have quit riding my bike here on the supposed safe bike lines. More and more bikers are getting injured weekly.

We can all hope people slow down and quit texting, but in reality it won’t happen. Bob Dylan wrote (in his song “Blowin’ in the Wind”): “How many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry? Yes, ’n’ how many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died?”

Please build us bike paths.

Bon voyage

I would like to see Sens. Rubio and Scott and Gov. DeSantis and their families lead the first cruise from Florida with anyone else who wishes to join them.

Crackdowns on protesters

Almost in the wake of the heart-wrenching George Floyd case, Gov. DeSantis signed House Bill 1, which, in part, (authorizes) crackdowns on protesters. He has created a piece of legislation no one asked for.

As a former Republican who voted for this man, I am shocked, appalled and incredibly disappointed in DeSantis. What other ideas will he be signing into law? We can only imagine.

More justices on court?

President Trump was able to fill three vacancies on the U.S. Supreme Court with justices who follow the Constitution. Don’t  believe for a minute that the opposing side would not have killed to have had this opportunity.

Instead, they are just going to place four new justices on the court to have a voting advantage. One side should not have an advantage over the other, if they all followed the law and the Constitution, instead of their own personal ideologies.

Beach access too limited

Goodbye, Marco Island. We love you, but you don’t love us anymore.

After 10 years of winter or spring renting on Marco, the Residents’ Beach restrictions have made vacation with our grandkids unsafe. Crossing Collier Boulevard with five small ones is too hard on my wife and me and somewhat dangerous. We gladly paid the fees to park at Residents’ Beach and enjoyed lunch there as well. We drive by now and see dozens of empty spots, while we try to time our arrival at one of the two other spots on Collier.

We will leave Marco for the last time May 5. In the past, we have signed a rental agreement for two months, but not for next year. We’ll miss the folks at Marco Island Vacation Properties; they always made our vacation time easier. I wish the Marco Island Civic Association had felt the same.

Ken and Patty Cupp, Marco Island vacationers from Plymouth, Mass.

Bar too crowded

We took visitors from Ohio to Mercato (in North Naples) hoping for some evening entertainment April 16. The greeter at (a business) invited us in and we finally found a place to sit on the patio by a pass-through bar. No one, including the servers, wore a mask, and soon a group of eight congregated at the bar. Two of the men were smoking, and patrons had to squeeze by the group blocking the walkway.

Our visitors were shocked by the scene and commented that the place would be shut down in Ohio.

I spoke to the manager about the scene, and he said, “We can’t tell people what to do.”

Spring break behavior.
