2020: Election Day in Florida

Here’s a look in Florida as of Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020.

State Senate 27

Ray Rodrigues defeated Rachel Brown in the race to represent District 27 in the Florida Senate. 

Rodrigues received 60.58% of the vote, or 172,982 votes, while Brown received 39.42% of the vote or 112,584 votes, according to unofficial election results.

The District 27 seat covers Lee County communities including Cape Coral, Sanibel, Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach and Estero. 

Rodrigues, 50, of Estero, was the state representative for Florida House District 76 and was first elected in 2012. Brown, 25, of San Carlos Park, has been a student at Florida Gulf Coast University where she has studied environmental engineering.

State House 76

Adam Botana beat Anselm Weber in the race to represent District 76 in the Florida House. 

Republican Adam Botana received about 66% of the vote, or 66,833 votes, compared to 34%, or 35,133 votes for Democrat Anselm Weber, according to unofficial Tuesday evening results from the Florida Division of Elections.

District 76 covers a coastal swath from Bonita Springs to Sanibel and Pine Island. 

Botana, a Bonita resident, is the vice president of the Bay Water Boat Club. Weber ran on a platform that included increasing minimum wages and environmental advocacy.

State House 77

Mike Giallombardo beat Joshua Lopez in the race to represent District 77 in the Florida House. 

Republican Mike Giallombardo received 64% of the vote, or 63,883 votes, compared to 36% of the vote, or 35,471 votes for Democrat Joshua Lopez, according to unofficial Tuesday evening results from the Florida Division of Elections.

The district includes Cape Coral. 

Giallombardo is a chief warrant officer in the National Guard. Lopez is a family and criminal lawyer. During the campaign, both men said they were concerned about water quality in their community.

State House 78 

Jenna Persons beat Shawn Michael Williams in the race to represent District 78 in the Florida House. 

Republican Jenna Persons received 57% of the vote, or 51,083 votes, compared to 43% of the vote, or 37,833 votes for Democrat Shawn Michael Williams, according to unofficial Tuesday evening results from the Florida Division of Elections.

District 78 takes in the Fort Myers and Gateway area. 

Persons is a civil lawyer. Williams is a certified public accountant. Both are natives of Lee County and active community volunteers.

State House 79

Spencer Roach beat Danika Fornear in the race to represent District 79 in the Florida House. 

Republican Spencer Roach, the incumbent, received 61% of the vote, or 44,490 votes, compared to 39% of the vote, or 28,619 votes for Democrat Danika Fornear, according to unofficial Tuesday evening results from the Florida Division of Elections.

The district spans North Fort Myers, Buckingham, Alva and Lehigh Acres. 

Roach was elected to the seat in 2018 and is an advocate of social services for the vulnerable. Fornear, a journalist, was recruited by the Democratic Environmental Caucus of Florida to run.

State House 80 

Lauren Melo beat Laura Novosad in the race to represent District 80 in the Florida House.  

Republican Lauren Melo received 65% of the vote, or 52,571 votes, compared to 35% of the vote or 28,884 votes for Democrat Laura Novosad, according to unofficial Tuesday evening results from the Florida Division of Elections.

The district takes in eastern Collier and Hendry County. 

The seat was vacated by Republican Byron Donalds. Melo, of Naples, owns her own brokerage firm, Florida’s Realty Specialists. Novosad has worked in real estate since 2010 in Naples and Fort Myers.
