Sunday is “Pi Day” because it’s March 14. It’s supposed to be a celebration of the mathematical constant pi, because the date is the first three digits, 3.14.

This has evolved into an excuse to mark the occasion with actual pie: pot pies, apple pie, quiche, banana cream, cheesecake, even pizza pie and more.

Since there’s always room for pie, here’s a guide to some of the finest slices in Metro Detroit, sweet and savory. Keep these in mind next month when thinking of your Easter, Passover or Iftar dinner table.

Sweet Potato Pie from Sweet Potato Sensations: Not only does this Detroit staple have sweet potato pie, the family owned business sells sweet potato pecan pie, sugar-free sweet potato pie, sweet potato cheesecake and sweet potato, apple and peach cobbler, plus other desserts and a menu of savory meals. 17337 Lahser, Detroit. (313) 532-7996. sweetpotatosensations.com.

Salted Maple Pie from Sister Pie: A signature at the West Village bakery, this salted maple pie is a hat tip to the New York City food destinations that Sister Pie owner Lisa Ludwinski got her start in: Momofuku Milk Bar in Manhattan and Four & Twenty Blackbirds in Brooklyn. It’s one of the stars of the “Sister Pie” cookbook, which came out in 2018 with 45 recipes for their sweet and savory pies (plus other dishes). Detroiters can get the buttery treat as a 9-inch pie or by the slice. 8066 Kercheval, Detroit. (313) 447-5550. sisterpie.com.

Kafta Pie from New Yasmeen Bakery: A great spot for savory pies, this Dearborn bakery has meat, cheese and even vegan pies fresh out of the oven, in sizes to share or keep for yourself. Some pies are closed like little pockets and others are open-top, like the meaty kafta pie made with ground beef seasoned with tomato, onion, garlic, parsley and other spices and topped with sesame seeds. They offer online ordering so you can plan ahead. 13900 W. Warren, Dearborn. (313) 582-6035. toasttab.com/yasmeenbakery/v3.

Irish Stew Pie from Ackroyd’s Scottish Bakery: Add to your St. Patrick’s Day celebration with this Redford bakery’s Irish stew pie, filled with ground sirloin, potatoes, carrots, peas, pickled onions and gravy. Order a four-pack of individual pies online for pick up at the bakery, or get it shipped anywhere in the United States. Not into stew? Try their vegetarian spinach and feta pies, vegan “meat” pies and other specialties. The shop is closed for browsing, so call ahead or check the website. 25566 Five Mile, Redford. (313) 532-1181. ackroydsbakery.com

Chicken Pot Pie from Great Lakes Pot Pies: This Clawson-based pie shop has dinner ready for you to pop in the oven. Their chicken pot pie — flavorful but not too salty — is handcrafted with a flaky, buttery crust keeping in juicy chicken and vegetables inside. They sell it as a 9-inch pie for a group, a 5-inch pie for one person, or as an even smaller hand pie if you just want to taste. They also have meatball and vegetable pot pies, quiches and a selection of gluten-free and vegan pies. Great Lakes Pot Pies, which opened last April, will celebrate its first year of business by expanding its footprint into the storefront next door later this spring. 809 W. 14 Mile, Clawson. (248) 266-1160. greatlakespotpies.com.

Dutch Apple from Elliott’s Bakery: Serving the Downriver community for about 90 years, this cute retro bakery is known for its pies and other sweets. They’re closed Sundays, but they are taking Pi Day orders through Friday for pickup on Saturday. Besides their crumbly topped Dutch apple pie, they’ll be selling regular apple pie, banana, blueberry, cherry, chocolate peanut butter, coconut cream, coffee cream, lemon meringue and pumpkin pies. 2636 W. Jefferson, Trenton. (734) 676-1940.

Michigan ABC Crumb Pie from Grand Traverse Pie Company: It is “Pure Michigan” in a flaky crust with locally grown Northern Spy apples, Rubel blueberries and Montmorency cherries. It’s a fruit-lovers dessert dream, and it’s just one of many sweet treats from this bakery, which has 15 cafe locations across Michigan and will also ship from its website. Get a free slice of the ABC Crumb Pie on Sunday at any location with a purchase. gtpie.com

Banana Split Pie from Achatz: In addition to fruit pies, meat pies and gluten- and sugar-free varieties, this multi-location Michigan pie company also specializes in sweet creamy pies like their banana cream and banana split pies, which are prepared fresh-to-order and contain more than a pound of fruit. Visit achatzpies.com to order online or find one of their six Southeastern Michigan locations.
