The National Hurricane Center is tracking one system in the Atlantic basin, Hurricane Eta.

Eta became a Category 1 hurricane Monday morning, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. Rapid strengthening of the system is possible, and forecasters said Eta could be a major hurricane before its expected landfall early Tuesday.

Hurricane Eta: Storm threatens to bring heavy rain, storm surge

Eta is the 12th hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season and the 28th named Atlantic storm this season, tying the 2005 record for named storms, according to Philip Klotzbach, meteorologist at Colorado State University who specializes in Atlantic basin hurricane forecasts.

Here’s the latest update from the NHC as of 2 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2:

What’s out there and where is it?

1Eta became a Category 1 hurricane Sunday night as it approaches Central America.

How likely is it to strengthen?

Hurricane Eta could become a major hurricane before it reaches the northeastern coast of Nicaragua early Tuesday. A major hurricane, of Category 3 or higher, has winds of more than 111 mph.

Details on Hurricane Eta

Life-threatening storm surge, damaging winds, flash floods and landslides are expected across portions of Central America.

  • Location: 175 miles east-northeast of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua
  • Maximum sustained winds: 75 mph
  • Present movement: west at 12 mph

Who is likely to be impacted?

It’s still too early at this time to determine whether Florida will feel the impact from Hurricane Eta.

One model shows Eta moving north into the northwestern Caribbean Sea after landfall in Central America. From there, the system could continue north into the Gulf of Mexico. In this case, impacts to the U.S. would not be completely out of the question, according to AccuWeather.

Forecasters advise all residents to stay informed and be prepared during this very active hurricane season.
