President Donald Trump’s tweet this morning that he will not attend the inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden means he likely will be in Florida before Jan. 20 — the day Biden is scheduled to be sworn in.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump changed their primary residence from New York to Mar-a-Lago in September 2019. Renovations have reportedly been underway to update the family’s private quarters at the president’s private club and the first lady visited a private school in Boca Raton for their teenage son Barron to attend.
While the date of the family’s move to Palm Beach has not been announced, Trump has visited Mar-a-Lago for the long Martin Luther King Day weekend during his time as president. This year, the holiday honoring the civil rights leader is Jan. 18 — two days before Biden’s inauguration.
Also unknown is how Trump’s residency will impact traffic on South Ocean Boulevard on Palm Beach. During Trump’s presidential visits, the road has been closed. However, former presidents are not provided the same level of security when out of office.
