A 12-year-old Fort Myers boy has been arrested on armed robbery charges after surveillance cameras caught him and another youth during the alleged 2 a.m. crime at a Wawa gas station Monday.

The child remains in the juvenile justice center with bond not yet set and a March 15 arraignment.

The News-Press is not using his name because of his age.

A second child has been identified and a warrant issued for his arrest, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office said the arrested boy and the accomplice were seen earlier Monday, around 1 a.m., trying to break into Larry’s Pawn Shop on North Cleveland Avenue. The Sheriff’s Office said the pair managed to smash a front door but could not gain entrance.

The same two walked into the Wawa store and were spotted acting suspiciously by employees.

When a cashier returned to the register, she saw the two loading up e-cigarettes from behind the counter. One of the teens turned to her and raised a hammer over his head, motioning her to move back.

The suspects then fled through the store’s rear entrance.

Tips provided from the Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers lead to the identification of both boys.

Initially, detectives believe the two likely lived in the area near the store. The boy who was arrested does live less than 2 miles from the Wawa.
